The sakura in Kyoto are overwhelming in number and colour during full bloom. In shades of pink varying from almost white to a dusty violet, they line both sides of the sidewalks in a perfect frame, providing a backdrop for many a family photo (or selfie).
By the way, did I tell you about the latest Japanese selfie trend? It's brilliant. It's called the "hair smile". Whenever someone snaps your photo (or whenever you take a selfie), you look down or away and give the peace sign. Although many people seem baffled by the concept, we were told that it was because the girls want to emulate celebrities pretending to avoid the paparazzi. So there you have it. I even saw a girl taking a selfie waiting for a train, covering her face with her hand and peeking out from between her fingers. Good ol' Japan!
