ONE CANADA SQUARE (BRUNCH)

Brunch at One Canada Square is a bright, cheery and utterly delicious affair. From start to finish, we were thoughtfully attended to, and towards the end of our meal, the pianist had arrived and was providing some relaxing background music for diners.

I don't know if we were simply lucky or whether every weekend is like this, but thankfully we'd found the one brunch spot in East London that wasn't crammed with people. Sure, sometimes you want the bustling, noisy atmosphere of a young and vibrant establishment. Sometimes, though, you just want to walk right in, be seated, and be treated to a hearty meal in relaxed, elegant surroundings.

After sitting down, a steel cup of gorgeous warm breads was brought to the table, along with two butters - one salt and one truffle. My God, if I hadn't been so excited about the actual menu items, I could have happily gorged myself on the entire lot.

Upon being handed menus, I decided I was craving something sweet and was immediately drawn to the buttermilk pancakes. Jarv and I also decided to order the soft shell crab Benedict to share, so everyone was happy!

Blueberry buttermilk pancakes, smoked streaky bacon, maple syrup (with the option of adding ice cream - I gave it a miss this time). Although I prefer leaner cuts of bacon, the balance of salty and slightly crunchy pork with fluffy pancakes and super sweet, mushy blueberries was a pure delight. There was a LOT of blueberry sauce, though, and I couldn't finish it all.

Soft shell crab 'Benedict', jalapeno hollandaise. YUM. Ugh, the egg was perfectly poached and oozed out all over the place. The crab couldn't have been better, and the whole dish just left me craving more.

Happy customers. Jarv had the OCS breakfast - fried duck egg, crisp pancetta, chorizo, morcilla, hash browns and an English muffin, which he vacuumed up within minutes. I guess he liked it (a lot). Our friend Dmitry went for the sweetcorn and courgette fritters, bacon, avocado salsa, goat's curd and roast tomatoes, which was also fantastic, full of flavour. All in all, I'm excited to have such an awesome brunch spot in my neighbourhood for leisurely Saturday mornings afternoons.

Brunch is served every Saturday, from 9am to 5pm.
