So, after spending 10 days travelling through East & Southeast Asia (and subsequently, the last 2 days suffering horrible eye pain after discovering I have developed an eye ulcer through, most likely, the clever idea of wearing my daily lenses on a long-haul flight. It's not quite as disgusting as it sounds, although I do have a hideously red eye, just frightening enough to pass as part of an extremely realistic Halloween getup)...I am back.
I'm back with a whole host of posts about my travels, from hotels to private villas to scuba diving (with underwater photos - yay!) to style whilst abroad. To start off: today I'd like to introduce you to The Peninsula hotel in Bangkok. If you haven't been here before, it's situated right next to the Chao Phraya river, at the end of Charoennakon Road. Reminiscent of old-school Asian glamour, this is worlds away from the hip, trendy W hotel types, instead evoking a sense of nostalgia and a more mature style of glitzy luxury.
My favourite part of the suite had to be the bathroom. Covered in marble with two separate sink areas opposite one another (no arguing over mirror space or who gets to brush their teeth first here), a gorgeous tub and spacious shower, it's a dream space for pampering types.
A sprawling green lawn leading to the river will take you to the Peninsula pier, where restored rice barges wait to whisk you off to explore Bangkok via the Skytrain station.
And you simply can't leave before indulging in a warm night time swim, looking out at the Chao Phraya river (the pool is open until 11pm). Do be warned, though - there are mosquitoes waiting to feast on your blood, so I wouldn't recommend hanging out on the loungers after dark!
There's an old world charm to the hotel, and the spectacular pool at night is just the cherry on top of a luxuriously gorgeous stay. My verdict? A fantastic experience in every aspect - from the cocktails to the pool to room service to our suite. I only wish we'd had the opportunity to stay longer and sample some of the heavenly smelling food we caught a whiff of from the restaurant - something to add to the list for next time.
