Happy New Year! I hope everyone is refreshed, invigorated and ready to take on another year. It feels strange for me now to be writing about our last visit to Bali when we are back here again so soon after, but it's fast become our favourite escape destination, our feel-good sanctuary, a place we must return to at every available opportunity.

Anyway, today I write about Uluwatu, our final stop during our previous visit. Uluwatu is in the southernmost part of Bali, with winding roads and clifftop views galore. It's extremely popular with surfers. The first time I'd ever stayed in the area was a year ago, at the incredible Alila Villas, which we had to return to for lunch this time with friends in tow. We were now staying at The Edge. Kind of a mini resort but also kind of an airbnb style villa, if you travel in a large group you can rent the entire place out (ten beds). If you travel alone or with friends, you may rent a one bed, two bed, three bed or five bed villa. So, if staying as a couple or a foursome, you may find you share the public pool and bar area with other guests (though you'll have your own private one anyway), or you may find, like us, that you pretty much have run of the entire place!

Unfortunately, during our stay, there was some construction taking place opposite (they're extending their villas and services). This wasn't really too bothersome as they didn't start too early in the morning and were done by evening, however it was a bit of a nuisance when trying to relax. The other issue was service; we felt disappointed with the lack of knowledge, helpfulness and professionalism of the staff we were assigned. Perhaps this is due to the place entering a new phase of change, but they certainly have some kinks to iron out. Fix this issue and the place itself is perfection. I mean, see for yourself how photogenic it is!

The cool thing about Uluwatu is that all the luxury resorts are within 10 - 20 minutes drive of one another, scattered over the cliffs. We had a fantastic time trying new resorts for dinner each evening, from the stunning Bvlgari resort to the beautiful Banyan Tree, and of course our beloved Alila. It's completely different to Ubud or Jimbaran or Tabanan. That's the beauty of Bali. Whether you want crashing waves on cliffs, serene beaches or jungles and waterfalls, you'll find it all here.

Featured in this post:

Alila Uluwatu - incredible all around. Even if you don't stay, it's well worth having lunch at Warung. Best bebek goreng (fried duck) in town.

The Edge - luxury villa resort owned by Mesa Hotels & Resorts (we previously stayed at Mesa Stila in Java and loved it).

Bvlgari Resort - a gorgeous, gorgeous resort. Incredible food and presentation at Sangkar restaurant.

Banyan Tree Resort - another lovely resort where we had a fantastic French dinner in the light of a full moon at Ju-Ma-Na Bar & Restaurant.

Finn's Beach Club - you pay your way in for the day (about 15GBP, which includes some allowance for food & drink). If the waters are calm enough, you can have a go at kayaking or paddleboarding!

Ayana Resort - after seeing Rock Bar featured so often on Instagram, we decided to give it a try. Personally, I found it a tad overrated and the drinks were not very good, but it was pretty at sunset.

Kecak dance at Uluwatu temple - well worth seeing! A very unique experience at sunset.

  3. Wow, this place looks incredible! I'm sorry to hear that you had to deal with construction and the staff wasn't too helpful, two things that certainly frustrate me. I think I have such a sensitive ear because the slightest noise bothers me when all else is quiet, so sounds of construction just irritates me! This is only within recent years because having grown up in the inner city of New York, quiet and peacefulness doesn't quite exist, haha! Nonetheless, it looks like you had a wonderful time and made the best of those small deficiencies. Thanks so much for sharing your experience with us, beautiful, and I hope you're having wonderful day so far!

    1. Thank you, my dear! I'm quite used to a lot of noise at night having grown up mostly in Shanghai (24+ million people...there's a lot of traffic and car beeping at all hours, haha). However construction when you're trying to relax and enjoy an ocean view or lay by the pool...not at all fun!

  6. I don't know how many times I've said 'Oh my gosh' on your blog now, though one more time can't hurt - oh my gosh! Everything is so utterly picturesque about this travel diary; you look amazing in your bikini, the dining settings continuously impress and every detail is thought off - right down to the Lanvin toiletries!
