Andaz 5th Avenue: Terrace Suite in New York

Euriental | fashion & luxury travel | Andaz 5th Avenue Terrace Suite, New York

After a faultless one night stay at the Hyatt Regency Jersey City, I was looking forward to returning to a hotel we'd had an amazing stay at last year: the Andaz 5th Avenue. Last time, we stayed in the beautiful Splash Suite with a view overlooking the Public Library. This time, we were eager to check out a terrace suite (especially as the weekend promised lots of sunshine).

The room itself was lovely, but getting there was a whole other story. We'd been guaranteed a terrace suite with our Hyatt Diamond suite upgrades. Upon arrival, we were informed that the room wouldn't be ready for another few hours, so we'd be put up in a temporary room for now until it was ready for us. The temporary room was a soulless, undecorated disabled access room round the back of the hotel with a rather depressing view of an empty, littered, unused courtyard area. Basically, we didn't have access to the terrace suite we'd been guaranteed until about 6pm, when the best time to actually use the terrace had long gone (and we only had a one night stay).

Although the lobby staff were always friendly, helpful and polite, whoever was working the housekeeping phones during our stay needs to be fired. I'm not exaggerating. 5 times over the course of two hours Jarv called up asking for more coffee capsules, and 5 times he was told someone would be right up, only for coffee never to arrive. Not just this, but the lies started pouring in after the third request: it had now been escalated to a manager, the 'director of housekeeping' would be in shortly, etc. None of this was true. None of this ever happened.

It was shocking behaviour; I've never witnessed such poor service in a supposedly 'luxury hotel' in a major city. Why sit on the end of the phone, tell a loyal guest that their request is being fulfilled over and over, yet do nothing at all about it? Coffee is a complimentary, standard service offered in the room and to bring up a few more capsules is no difficult or unusual task. I was truly baffled.

When someone came to deliver our room service breakfast, we found he hadn't been told at all about our multitude of requests for coffee capsules (thankfully he was great, proactively asking if there was anything else we wanted and running down to immediately bring us the capsules).

Honestly, the first time I stayed here, I loved everything about the hotel. Now? I wouldn't stay here again. Such a shame.

On a more positive note, if you're in New York and in the mood for dim sum with a twist, I would highly recommend Red Farm. Delicious, playful and inventive farm-to-table dishes. Pictured below are Katz's Pastrami egg rolls, pork & crab soup dumplings (xiao long bao), seared pork & shrimp dumplings and Pacman shrimp dumplings.

Mmm. Good food makes everything better!

  4. Lol at the people leaving unrelated comments...maybe read the post first? I'm surprised to hear about the service. I've stayed there before myself and enjoyed it. It's a real shame to read about this, I would forward this on to them if I were you. Have you left a tripadvisor review?

    1. Yeah, we enjoyed it the first time, too, unfortunately the service was just so much worse than any place I have ever stayed this time that I can't see myself going back. I did get a cookie cutter copy & paste sort of response from someone there after I posted this article but that was it. Thanks for stopping by, Mike!

  7. That really is such a pity - a potentially beautiful stay with its sparkle sucked out thanks to the mismanagement. Other than everything that went on 'behind the scenes' though, you've covered your stay as beautifully as ever! The bathroom is beyond dreamy and the shot of you looking out from the balcony is utterly perfect - immediately thought 'model's instagram shot', if you get what I mean? haha.
